Ambulance Service

Shetland forms part of the North East Division of the Scottish Ambulance Service which has its headquarters in Aberdeen.

The local operational base is the Lerwick Station, which is located in the grounds of the Gilbert Bain Hospital.

The full-time staff in Shetland are supported by Responsible Person Sites in Unst, Yell and Whalsay. The Service responds to over 1,200 Emergency and Urgent Calls and undertakes over 4,000 routine patient transport movements in Shetland each year.

As with most rural stations in Scotland, the service in Shetland does a combination of emergency and non emergency work and operates two Accident & Emergency vehicles and one Non-Emergency Service vehicle in Lerwick.

There are eight accident and emergency staff (7.5 WTE) and two non-emergency service staff (1.25 WTE).

The full-time staff are supported by Responsible Person Sites in Unst, Yell, and Whalsay - these are manned by people who have been trained by the Service in patient care, using equipment and have an A&E ambulance. They are not contacted by the public.
