Shetland NHS Board is responsible for health care for a population of 23,000. Local Hospital and Community Services are provided from the Gilbert Bain and Montfield Hospitals. In addition, visiting consultants from NHS Grampian provide out-patient clinics as well as in-patient and day-case surgery to supplement the service provided by our locally-based Consultants in General Medicine, General Surgery, Anaesthetics and Psychiatry.

Board Corporate Objectives 2009-10

  1. To continue to improve and protect the health of the people of Shetland
  2. To ensure high quality services are provided which meet evidence-based standards and are delivered in the most appropriate setting for the patient
  3. To maintain core services as close to home as possible
  4. To redesign services where appropriate to ensure a modern sustainable local health service
  5. To continue to reduce the time people wait for services
  6. To develop partnership working with patients, the public, staff and other stakeholders
  7. To ensure we treat all patients, members of the public, NHS staff and staff of partner organisations equally and fairly, regardless of their race, age, gender, disability, religion, sexual orientation, location or income
  8. To continue to remain within financial balance
