Who You May Meet if Admitted to Montfield Hospital
During your stay in hospital your care will be provided by a multi-disciplinary team. Members of the team are:
| Consultant | Patient medical care is supervised by a Consultant who has other doctors to help him/her. It is important that
patients should understand the nature of any treatment or procedure that is to be carried out. This will be explained to
the patient by a doctor. Please feel free to ask for further information to clarify any points or obtain more detailed
information.
Consent to treatment - In the Gilbert Bain Hospital patients and/or relatives are encouraged and will have the opportunity to discuss issues relating to medical interventions with the nursing and medical staff. Resuscitation - NHS Shetland has a Resuscitation Policy which strives to observe the wishes of patients and their relatives. An information booklet on resuscitation is available, or the booklet can be obtained from the Ward Sister which may be of assistance in this matter. |
| Nursing | On admission the patient will be allocated a Named Primary Nurse who will be responsible for planning their care with them. The Named Primary Nurse will lead a team of nurses who together will provide the care needed for each individual. |
| Dietitian | The Dietitian provides dietary advice for all older patients and special dietary advice as required. |
| Occupational Therapy | The Occupational Therapy Department aims to promote independence in all activities of daily living. The Occupational Therapist will give advice and treatment based on information obtained during assessment. |
| Physiotherapy | There is a well-equipped Physiotherapy Department in the Gilbert Bain Hospital. All new patients are assessed and advice or treatment given as appropriate. |
| Podiatry | The Podiatry Department provides treatment for patients who require it. |
Catering and hotel services are provided by outside contractors.
All staff can be identified by NHS Shetland name badges.
Names of medical and nursing staff on duty each day are written on white boards in the wards. Photographs of the nursing staff are also on display beside these boards.
At all times, if you are unsure of someone's identity, please ask.
Others whom you may meet are the Optician, Dentists and Orthodontist, Physiological Measurements, Medical Imaging and Medical Records staff.
Other Agencies
We work closely with other agencies, eg Social Care Department of the Shetland Islands Council, Shetland Welfare Trust, Department of Social Security, Solicitors and Citizens Advice Bureau. You may meet staff from these organisations during your stay. If you should require assistance from any of these organisations, please contact the nurse in charge of the Ward.
