Stroke Services in Shetland - 2005
NHS Shetland provides a wide range of services to people with stroke which include:
- A multidisciplinary stroke team providing early and long term assessment and treatment of patients in hospital (which includes team contributions from OT, Physio, Speech and Language and nursing services).
- A multidisciplinary supported discharge service providing long term follow up and reassessment of patients after they have been discharged from hospital (at 3 months, 6 months and 12 months).
- Consultant led Out Patient clinics for patients requiring out of hospital assessment and follow up.
Over the next 12 months (2005-06) the Stroke Advisory Group will be working on a number of initiatives to further improve stroke service provided in Shetland. The priorities for 2005 and 2006 include:
- Monitoring and evaluating the impact of introducing the new supported discharge and follow up service.
- Exploring training needs of staff involved in stroke care across Shetland.
- Introducing new patient information materials.
- Developing an action plan to build on the work already done (see QIS review).
- Further develop guidelines for practice.
